Why Flat Lays are so Great

WHAT ARE FLAT LAYS?

Flat lay is a styling technic of laying out a number of items flat on a surface to make so that they can be photographed from above.

Flat lays are a great way of photographing multiple details in a clean manner which is pleasing to the eye. This is why photographing wedding details in this manner is so popular amongst many fine art wedding photographers.

WHAT WEDDING DETAILS CAN YOU PHOTOGRAPH ON FLAT LAY?

Oh so many things, we can photograph your rings, earnings, jewellery, hair pieces, veil, shoes, perfume, invitations & stationery, vows, garter and selections of florals and foliage.

You can replicate the same thing on the men's side with the inclusion of their shoes, tie, buttonhole, cufflinks, socks, watch or anything sentimental.

WHY PHOTOGRAPH THE DETAILS IN FLAT LAY?

Photographing your wedding details is all part of the story telling process. When you watch a movie, you don't just see the faces of the actors, you see the director hinting on where the actors are by setting the scene through details...and that is exactly what I do a story telling fine art photographer. I want to capture ever little detail so that your story is remembered to the full.

Details also provide the gallery room to breathe through negative space, otherwise it can get a little bit overwhelming seeing only people's faces. Your eyes and mind need room to settle and details provide that in your gallery.

Flat lays details also make for stunning fine art framed prints to decorate your living room or wall art for your home.

WHAT GOES INTO PHOTOGRAPHING FLAY LAYS?

The art of styling flat lays in an acquired skill. A good flat lay can take from 30mins to 1hour to style and photographed depending on the number of iteams. I do spend some time practicing flat lay stylings at home and am now able to reduce that time significantly only because on a wedding day I might not always have the luxury of that time.

If you love the idea of flat lays and want these as part of your own wedding collection, I would recommend hiring a photographer who is experienced with styling these elements as such. They will also have the kit to create these lovely creations including boards, ring boxes and ribbons.
